Padilla was a patient at
Kaiser for about 10 years. He had signed up around 1998. He
had changed health coverage because the cost of his
medications was less expensive with the Kaiser plan.
Julian was a retired railroad senior citizen. On 2-6-07 his family called an ambulance so that he could have an MRI done for the constant bleeding of his nose he had for about a year and for which Kaiser had refused to treat. He gave me, Dina Padilla a "thumbs up" and was sitting up on the guerney fully awake and alert when I met him at the hospital that day. Julian
was on
Coumadin, heart and diabetes medications and had given the list of meds
to the ambulance EMT.
When Julian entered
the
hospital we thought he was going to be
transferred to the Kaiser Morse facility but instead kaiser put him in
the
Kaiser Roseville hospice unit. He was given no medications for his
heart or his diabetes. They did not give him coumadin either and his
nose bleeding had stopped.
Julian was given an
I.V.
shunt but he was not given any IV fluids. His brother - my husband
Fred, asked me why would there be an IV shunt but no fluids attached to
the IV. He couldn't understand why the iv connection but no
fluid.
That night Fred and his sister were asked to sign papers for the hospice care by a Kaiser nurse via the Kasier doctor who had admitted Julian. All three siblings said no, that they would not sign anything and for the doctor to call Julian's immediate family. According to Fred, the doctor from Kaiser stated that they had gotten permisson from a woman over the phone to put him into the hospice unit. No IV with fluid, no water, no food and no meds were being given to Julian. Julian had labored breathing with no meds food or water until his one daughter on the evening of 2-9-07 asked why her father had not been given his meds. She asked the nurse to speak to the doctor and the nurse said the doctor was the only one covering the hospital and that he was too busy to speak to his daughter. During this time a
cerified nursing assistant brought Julian containers full of
water but he was not allowed to drink it!
My daughter had to
go to
Julian's home and get his Power of
Attorney. After reading it, Julian's daughter relayed the info
to the
nurse and Julian was put on Full code and taken off of the no
code that the Kaiser doctor had authorized.
The full code was
written
on a
yellow hard form and having previously worked for kaiser, the form, I
believe
should have been written on a triplicate copy.
Julian was taken
off of the hospice no code. He was finally given his
some
of his heart meds but not his diabetic meds and then was
given food and
water.
The nurse said he didn't need the diabetes meds because his sugar level was fine. That night we went home elated that Julian was going to be given regular medical care, and he was sitting up and talking with family for a couple of days and all this time he was able to communicate until somewhere his family was told by an outside doctor that he had a a tumor on the frontal lobe. This was
drawn
on a white piece of paper left on the outside walls
of Julian's room where everyone could see. NO x-ray and no MRI film,
just drawing that any child could do but the drawing wasn't
clear enough
to show the problem.
The family was told
that
Julian would not be able to survive the
surgery and he was put back on hospice care. My husband had
brought
Julian a cheeesburger, french fries and a strawberry shake and Julian
ate almost all of the food. This was a meal that Julian had
shared
with my husband, his brother Fred, when Fred was little after a day's
work with his older brother and father figure. Then a nurse
came in
and told my husband that Julian was not allowed any food and chastised
Fred for giving him food and the strawberry shake.
The next several
days
were horrible, watching him dying for no
good reason. His hand shake was still strong and he could easily
recognize all of his large family and his family is huge. He told my
grandaughter that he loved her and the same to my two daughters who
looked at him as an uncle and a grandfather. To know that he was being
killed second by second and that we couldn't do anything about it is a
despair that we cannot describe that came from my husband to
see his
brother's life being taken away from him without him knowing he could
still be alive today.
A cousin had told
me that
she had gone through the same thing with her father at Kaiser.
Kasier's nurses had
a catherter inserted and we could see his
urine was red and then he was given morphine every few hours. I had
asked Fred at one point how much morhine was in the vial. Fred said
that the vial was hidden by a very big green glove that was
too big
for the nurse's hand and he couldn't even see the vial or the needle
that was inserted in the I.V.
Julian had a
automated
leg pump around both of his legs that was
to keep him from getting clots in his legs. What was the point when all
he was getting was morphine with no food, no water and no meds?
More money to be
charged
to medicare and his medical insurance?
The day before
Julian
died, a nurse had told Fred that Julian was
a strong man because Julian should have already died the day before.
The staff know how long it takes to die when they're on morphine and
being starved and dehydrated and no life saving meds to survive.
The 2nd to last
dose of
morphine was not given to him but the last
dose was double the amount and given around 5:30am.
2-24-07 Julian died or as I and Fred said, Julian was murdered. We knew it and so did others in his family. Julian B. Padilla
was no
longer on social security, no longer on
medicare, no longer on medical insurance and no longer on his
railroad
pension.
Julian is about the
10th
person of my husband's family to die by
Kaiser's neglience but Julian's death was the most blatant killing.
